MAO is the main Slovene museum of architecture and design and therefore its library consists mostly of books on these two areas of human creativity. It features some 10,000 monograph titles and 4,500 serial publications. It also encompasses a large archive of Slovene and international journals. Since 1972 the library staff has also collected articles on the museum’s areas of interest from the main Slovene newspapers and magazines.

The library opened in 1972 when the Architecture Museum of Ljubljana was founded. The core of its collection was Plečnik’s library, but the number of titles has grown steadily over the years because of regular purchases, as well as important collections of papers and personal libraries donated to the museum by individual architects (Dušan Grabrijan, Jaroslav Foerster, Ivo Spinčič, Drago Umek, Jaroslav Černigoj, Pavel Göstl, Stanko Rohrman etc.), photographers (Damjan Gale, Stojan Kerbler etc.) and others (the Sinteza journal archive, Lojze Trontelj, Peter Krečič etc.).
